Motherhood can be a joyful experience—and sometimes a stressful one. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can help restore your inner peace. It doesn't require special equipment. You can practice meditation wherever you are: out for a walk, waiting at the pediatrician’s office or even in the middle of a difficult business meeting.
Meditation produces a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. There are many different approaches. Here are three that are commonly used:
- Guided meditation. You form mental images of places you find relaxing, using as many senses as possible, such as smells, sights, sounds and textures. An instructor may guide you through this type of meditation.
- Mantra meditation. You silently repeat a calming word, thought or phrase to help prevent distracting thoughts.
- Mindfulness meditation. This is based on having an increased awareness and acceptance of living in the present moment. You focus on what you experience, such as the flow of your breath. You observe your thoughts and emotions but let them pass without judgment.
